Toto Wolff Predicts Psychological Edge for Max Verstappen in 2025 F1 Title Race
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has shared his insights on the ongoing battle for the 2025 Formula One championship, suggesting that Max Verstappen may hold a significant ‘psychological advantage’ over Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris as the season enters its final five rounds.
After the summer break, Verstappen appeared to be in a challenging position in the title race, especially following Piastri’s impressive win at the Dutch Grand Prix, which propelled him over 100 points ahead of Verstappen and put him 34 points clear of his teammate, Norris. However, the momentum has shifted dramatically in favor of the Red Bull driver in recent races. In the last four outings, Verstappen has secured three victories and a second-place finish in Singapore, while Piastri has struggled, failing to reach the podium in his last three races. As a result, with the Mexican Grand Prix approaching, the points gap between Piastri and Verstappen has narrowed to just 40 points.
Wolff reflected on his experiences with championship duels, noting, “I’ve been in a similar situation with two drivers vying for the title, and back then, Max was the one in the hunt, alongside Sebastian [Vettel]. The underdog often carries a psychological advantage due to the nature of competition. The odds seem stacked against Max, and a single DNS (Did Not Start) could dramatically alter the landscape of the championship, influencing how drivers approach overtakes.”
He further elaborated on the psychological pressure that can affect a driver’s decision-making during critical moments on the track, saying, “You can see how cautious Lando was at times; he had to weigh the risks of making a move.”
Despite Wolff’s perspective, current championship leader Piastri remains confident in his position. After finishing fifth in Austin, he asserted, “I’d still prefer to be in my position than in the shoes of the other two. Max and Red Bull have indeed found significant pace since the summer break. While we saw glimpses of their speed earlier in the season, their consistency has improved notably.”
Piastri acknowledged the challenges ahead but emphasized his belief that he can still clinch the title. “I’ve been in tight battles before, and I know that circumstances can change rapidly. I fully believe I can win the championship. This weekend has been tough, and the gap has shrunk a bit, but I’m determined to bounce back in the upcoming races.”
