Jon M. Chu Prepares to Revisit the World of "Crazy Rich Asians" with Exciting HBO Max Series
Jon M. Chu is gearing up to dive back into the lavish universe of "Crazy Rich Asians" as he awaits the green light for production on the highly anticipated HBO Max series. Following the success of his 2018 film adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novel, Chu recently provided insights into the challenges of continuing the story in this new format.
In an interview with Esquire, Chu explained, “It’s a real thing. We have scripts, and we’re waiting to be officially ready to go.” He acknowledged the complexities involved in developing a continuation of the story, noting, “It’s hard to do the continuation of the books because our characters changed so much in the first movie. It’s different from the books, even though it feels similar. So we can’t go one-to-one. However, we can draw a lot of inspiration from the book to explore more stories.”
While the cast has yet to be officially confirmed for the series, Chu remains optimistic, stating, “I have no doubt our cast will be there when we’re ready to start production.” Fans are eager to see if beloved actors like Michelle Yeoh and Henry Golding will reprise their roles.
The upcoming Warner Bros. television series has already established a development team, led by executive producer and showrunner Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original film alongside Peter Chiarelli. Additionally, both Chu and Kwan will serve as executive producers for the show. As of February, there have been unofficial discussions among the original cast regarding their return.
Importantly, this new series will not replace the long-awaited sequel to the 2018 film; instead, it will expand on the same book series that captured audiences worldwide. The original "Crazy Rich Asians" was a major hit, earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy and grossing over $239 million globally, shattering box office records.
The film follows Rachel Chu, played by Constance Wu, an NYU professor who travels to Singapore with her boyfriend Nick (Henry Golding) for a wedding. There, she discovers that Nick belongs to an incredibly wealthy family and is regarded as one of the most eligible bachelors in the country.
Stay tuned for more updates as Jon M. Chu and his team prepare to bring this captivating story back to life on HBO Max!
