Over 2,300 members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA), representing both the West and East branches, have come together to sign an open letter condemning the Trump administration’s recent threats to the freedom of the press. The letter emphasizes a united stance against the alarming and increasing assaults on the First Amendment, independent journalism, and free media.
The letter states, “As members of the Writers Guild of America, we raise our voices against the dangerous and escalating attacks on the First Amendment, independent media, and the free press.” It highlights President Trump’s ongoing efforts to silence criticism, including his calls for the cancellation of television programs that express dissent, notably during late-night shows and the popular talk show, The View. The letter concludes with a powerful reminder: “This period in American life will not last forever, and when it’s over, the world will remember who had the courage to speak out.”
The WGA’s message also addresses significant issues such as the recent lawsuit settlement involving 60 Minutes, the cancellation of The Late Show, and the defunding of public broadcasters. Notable signatories include Oscar-winning filmmakers like Spike Lee, Celine Song, Adam McKay, Alfonso Cuarón, and Kenneth Lonergan, alongside many influential writers and creators such as David Simon, Liz Merriwether, and Ilana Glazer.
In a detailed call to action, the letter asserts the essential role of storytelling, bold comedy, and investigative reporting in a healthy democracy. It condemns the unprecedented authoritarian tactics employed by the current administration, including baseless lawsuits against news organizations and threats to broadcasters who dare to publish unfavorable reports.
The letter urges elected officials and industry leaders to resist this overreach and calls upon the public to join in the fight for a free and democratic future. The Writers Guild emphasizes that free speech remains a right upheld by generations of Americans who fought for its protection.
The collective strength of the WGA allows its members to stand firm against these attacks, reminding us that when writers are targeted, their unity transforms into a powerful force for change.
