Wimbledon Star Oliver Tarvet’s Unique Game Chants: The Mystery Behind "Gareth"

Wimbledon sensation Oliver Tarvet has captured attention not just for his tennis skills, but also for his quirky habit of shouting "Gareth" at seemingly random moments during matches. While he has hinted that this chant is a nod to football, he remains tight-lipped about its true meaning.

When asked about the reference, Tarvet simply said, “I am not allowed to tell. It is a secret of ours.” He did tease that it might relate to either Gareth Bale or Gareth Southgate, stating, “I think I gave a little bit too much information, but, yeah, it’s one of those two guys. You’re cracking the code soon, but you’re going to have to wonder. I’m sorry.”

This inside joke serves as a playful reminder for his teammates to stay accountable for their decisions on the court. “My teammates were already annoyed at me for how much information I gave out. It’s just an inside joke to keep guys focused—that’s all I’m going to say,” he added.

Unlike many British youngsters who received wildcards, the 21-year-old college student worked hard through qualifying rounds and is set to compete against Leandro Riedi in the first round.

Tarvet reflects on his energetic style, saying, “It’s just who I am. It’s what gives me success—being a little more energetic and fiery than most players. I understand that some people might find it a bit annoying, but it’s what helps me succeed.”

He continues, “I’m not going to change who I am and what brings me success. While I’ll try to tone it down a bit, I find it pretty funny out there. My teammates were laughing, and they were blowing up our group chat when I shouted it during Wimbledon’s qualifying rounds. I aim to make it a little more fun and energetic on the court.”

With his unique approach and spirited personality, Oliver Tarvet is certainly one to watch at Wimbledon this year!
