Michael Cera Reflects on Fame and Turning Down Major Franchise Roles
In a recent episode of The Louis Theroux Podcast, actor Michael Cera candidly discussed his early career choices regarding fame and how they influenced his decision to decline a role in a major film franchise. The conversation delved into whether he had intentionally avoided franchise films, to which Cera responded, "I don’t think I have a franchise resistance. I think I know what you’re referring to."
Cera revealed that he once turned down an opportunity related to the Harry Potter universe, specifically in Fantastic Beasts. He explained, "I think I just declined to engage with it because it would probably be a six-year commitment." At that time, he consciously aimed to limit his exposure and maintain greater control over his career. "I had a big fear of becoming too famous too quickly," he admitted.
Rising to fame with his standout performances in 2007’s Superbad and Juno, as well as his role in Arrested Development, Cera is no stranger to the pressures of celebrity. While he didn’t specify which character he was considered for in the Fantastic Beasts series, the films featured Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, with two sequels released in 2018 and 2022.
Reflecting on his current perspective, Cera acknowledged, "I think that’s changed a little. I’ve outgrown that particular feeling." He indicated that if an intriguing franchise opportunity arose today, he wouldn’t shy away simply because it was part of a series.
During his conversation with Theroux, Cera also shared his struggles with fame, admitting, "I wasn’t really into attention that much and didn’t know how to create boundaries in a healthy way" during his teenage years. He described feeling overwhelmed when recognized by fans, often going into "fight or flight mode" due to the pressure of sudden fame.
Living in Los Angeles heightened these feelings for him, as he experienced what he termed "spotlight syndrome." "I felt very exposed," he explained, recalling how he became recognizable almost overnight at the age of 19. While he acknowledged the positive aspects of fame, such as meeting interesting people, he also pointed out the downsides, including the lack of boundaries and constant self-consciousness that came with being in the public eye. "I liked my life better before that," he concluded, reflecting on the complexities of fame and his journey as an actor.
