Home Secretary Faces Calls to Dismiss West Midlands Police Chief Over Safety Concerns for Jewish Fans in Birmingham
The Home Secretary is under pressure to remove the Chief Constable of West Midlands Police due to allegations of failing to ensure the safety of Jewish individuals in Birmingham. This outcry follows the announcement that fans of the Israeli football team Maccabi Tel Aviv would be prohibited from attending their match against Aston Villa on November 6.
The decision to ban the away fans sparked widespread condemnation from various political leaders, including Sir Keir Starmer and officials from Reform UK, the Conservative Party, and the Liberal Democrats. In response, Danny Kruger, the MP for East Wiltshire, has urged the Home Secretary to take decisive action. He suggested that Shabana Mahmood invoke Section 40 of the Police Act 1996, which allows the Home Secretary to intervene when a police force is deemed ineffective in fulfilling its responsibilities.
Kruger described the ban on Israeli fans as "outrageous," arguing that if West Midlands Police could not guarantee the safety of Jewish attendees due to local antisemitism, they should have considered canceling the match entirely rather than capitulating to pressure.
In defense of their actions, West Midlands Police cited previous incidents of violence and hate crimes, particularly a clash between Maccabi Tel Aviv fans and Dutch supporters in Amsterdam last year, as justification for the ban. The police stated that classifying the match as "high risk" was essential for ensuring public safety.
Local MP Ayoub Khan, who was elected as a pro-Gaza independent, initially called for the fixture to be canceled or for immediate measures to be taken to ensure public safety. Following the announcement of the fan ban, he expressed his satisfaction with the decision, highlighting that the concerns of residents and businesses had been addressed.
Cross-party condemnation quickly followed the announcement. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar described the ban as "shameful" and called for British authorities to reverse it. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey labeled the decision a "serious mistake," while Reform chief Nigel Farage criticized it as a new form of racial discrimination. Kemi Badenoch referred to the ban as a "national disgrace" and challenged the Prime Minister to take a stand with the Jewish community.
Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick remarked on the situation, emphasizing that the inability of police to guarantee safety for Israeli fans underscores the ongoing challenges of integration in parts of Birmingham. Meanwhile, Green Party leader Zack Polanski had yet to publicly comment on the matter.
West Midlands Police released a statement reaffirming their commitment to fair and impartial policing, emphasizing their collaborative approach with local partners in preparation for the high-risk match. They stated that the decision to prohibit away supporters was made based on current intelligence and past incidents, aiming to mitigate risks to public safety while maintaining a zero-tolerance policy on hate crime.
