Victor Conte, Controversial BALCO Founder, Passes Away at 75
In a significant loss to the sports community, Victor Conte, the founder of BALCO and a key figure in one of the most notorious performance-enhancing drug scandals in sports history, has died at the age of 75. His company, Scientific Nutrition for Advanced Conditioning (SNAC), shared the news of his passing on social media, revealing that he had been battling pancreatic cancer. The heartfelt post read, "We are heartbroken by the passing of our fearless leader. We will honor his wishes. SNAC and his legacy will carry forward, strong and forever. We LOVE you, Conte!"
Conte’s name became synonymous with controversy in 2003 when federal agents raided BALCO and his Northern California home during a high-profile investigation into steroid use that affected several major sports leagues, particularly Major League Baseball. In 2005, he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute steroids and money laundering, admitting to providing performance-enhancing drugs to renowned athletes such as Barry Bonds, the legendary home run hitter, and Olympic gold medalist Marion Jones.
Despite his criminal past, Conte maintained a complex legacy. He reflected on his controversial role in a Netflix documentary, stating, "When Marion Jones hit the finish line and won the gold medal, when Barry Bonds hit all these home runs, those are things that I’ll always be proud of." Following his sentencing, which included four months in a low-security federal prison and four months of house arrest, he shifted his focus to developing natural supplements through SNAC.
Even after his legal troubles, Conte remained active in the sports world, serving as an advisor to prominent boxers like Terence "Bud" Crawford and Claressa Shields. However, skepticism continued to surround him, especially during Crawford’s recent bout with Canelo Alvarez, where some critics questioned the integrity of his training team. In response to the negativity, Conte urged, "Please don’t stress the negativity of my past too much."
Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in May, Conte continued to work with athletes from his hospital bed in his final months, showcasing his dedication to the sport. His contributions, both positive and controversial, will be remembered as part of a complex legacy that shaped the landscape of professional athletics.
