In a surprising turn of events, the U.S. women’s gymnastics team secured only two medals at the World Championships held in Jakarta this past week, marking the country’s lowest medal count in international competition since 2001. The standout performers for Team USA were Leanne Wong, who earned a silver medal in the all-around category, and Joscelyn Roberson, who took home a bronze on the vault.

China outshone the U.S. by claiming three women’s medals, while neutral athletes representing Russia also matched that total.

Training for the Future

As the championships unfolded from October 19 to 25, 2025, at the Indonesia Arena, U.S. program lead Chellsie Memmel shared her thoughts on the team’s performance. "It was a tough competition," Memmel noted, as reported by Olympics.com. "There were some bright moments, but overall, the execution wasn’t as aggressive as we hoped. We’ve got positives to build on, but there’s clearly work to be done."

Memmel emphasized the need for open communication moving forward, saying, "We’ll discuss it but not dwell on it excessively. The team is aware that they didn’t perform at their peak, and they’re eager to return to training and improve."

A Shift in Dominance

Historically, the U.S. women’s gymnastics team has been a dominant force on the international stage. This year marks only the third instance since 2006 where the U.S. didn’t finish with the most medals in the women’s category, aside from 2017 and 2021 when they tied with Japan and Russia.

Notably, this year’s competition was without some key athletes, including Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey, and Jordan Chiles. This absence raises concerns about the future of the U.S. women’s gymnastics dynasty as they look ahead to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Memmel concluded with a message of confidence: "For me, it’s about approaching each performance with the belief that it will be great. They need to trust themselves and know that they can deliver when it counts."
