Air Travel Disruptions Ahead: U.S. Transportation Secretary Warns of Flight Reductions Due to Government Shutdown
In a recent briefing, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy highlighted the impending challenges for air travelers as the government shutdown continues. He announced that air traffic capacity at 40 major airports could be reduced by up to 10% in the coming days, primarily affecting domestic flights. This decision stems from concerns about air traffic controller fatigue, as noted by the head of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Bryan Bedford.
Currently, approximately 1.4 million federal employees, including air traffic controllers and park rangers, are either working without pay or on leave due to the ongoing budget impasse in Congress. Unions report that many employees are experiencing stress-related health issues or are resorting to secondary jobs to make ends meet.
As the shutdown now marks the longest in U.S. history, FAA Chief Bryan Bedford remarked on the unusual nature of the situation, emphasizing that the well-being of air traffic controllers is crucial for maintaining safety. The planned flight reductions will be implemented gradually: starting with a 4% cut on Friday, increasing to 5% on Saturday, and reaching 6% on Sunday, before potentially hitting the full 10% next week. Specific details about the airports affected, which include some of the busiest hubs like Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, Dallas/Fort Worth International, Denver International, Chicago O’Hare International, and Los Angeles International, are expected to be released soon. This could lead to the cancellation of approximately 3,500 to 4,000 flights daily, though international flights are anticipated to remain unaffected.
Bedford expressed concerns about the growing pressures on the air traffic system. "If we allow these pressures to go unchecked, it could impact our ability to assure the public that we operate the safest airline system in the world," he stated. Duffy reassured the public that air travel remains safe, and any cancellations aim to uphold efficiency and safety standards. However, should the government shutdown persist, further restrictions may be necessary.
American Airlines, as the second-largest carrier in North America, is currently assessing the situation and expects that most customers’ travel plans will remain intact. Similarly, Southwest Airlines is evaluating how the flight restrictions will impact its operations and has committed to keeping customers informed. Delta Airlines has not provided a comment at this time.
Since the shutdown commenced on October 1, federal workers have faced financial uncertainty, with many essential personnel, like air traffic controllers, continuing to work without pay. The effects of the shutdown have been felt at airports across the country, with reports of flight delays and cancellations due to controller shortages.
Nick Daniels, president of the labor union representing over 20,000 aviation workers, noted the dire circumstances for air traffic controllers, many of whom are struggling to afford transportation to work. "Right now, there is no predictability," he stated, highlighting the challenges faced by those in the aviation sector.
