Ukrainian Air Defenses Respond to Russian Attacks: Latest Updates from Kyiv

In the early hours of Sunday, Ukrainian air defense systems were activated to counter a Russian air assault on Kyiv, as confirmed by Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Air raid and missile alerts were triggered just before 2 AM, and local news outlets reported hearing explosions in the capital. This incident follows the largest Russian air raid on Kyiv in the ongoing conflict, which occurred just a week prior.

On Saturday, Russian drone and missile strikes across Ukraine tragically resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals, including a nine-year-old girl. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russian forces launched a total of 109 drones and five missiles overnight. Remarkably, Ukrainian defenses successfully intercepted three missiles and 42 drones, while an additional 30 drones failed to reach their intended targets, causing no damage.

The young girl lost her life in a strike on the frontline village of Dolynka in the Zaporizhzhia region, where a 16-year-old was also injured, reported Zaporizhzhia Governor Ivan Fedorov. Furthermore, Kherson Governor Oleksandr Prokudin confirmed that a man was killed by Russian shelling in the Kherson region.

In response to escalating threats, Ukrainian officials issued evacuation orders for 11 more villages in the northern Sumy region as Russian forces continue to gain territory. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced its control over the village of Novopil in the eastern Donetsk region and Vodolahy in the northern Sumy region. As a result, evacuation orders now affect 213 settlements in Sumy, which borders Russia’s Kursk region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that approximately 50,000 Russian troops have concentrated in the area, preparing for an offensive aimed at establishing a buffer zone within Ukrainian territory. Ukraine’s top military commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, noted that Russian forces are focusing their main offensive efforts on the regions of Pokrovsk, Torets, and Lyman in Donetsk, as well as the border area with Sumy. Syrskyi added that Ukrainian forces continue to hold territory within Russia’s Kursk region, contradicting Russian claims.

In Kursk, local officials reported that 14 individuals, including four children, sustained injuries when Ukrainian drones struck apartment buildings. President Zelenskyy criticized Russia for "undermining diplomacy" by withholding a promised memorandum outlining its stance on ending the ongoing war, which has lasted over three years. While tentative peace talks are scheduled for Istanbul in the coming week, Zelenskyy expressed frustration over Russia’s lack of transparency regarding the negotiation format, describing the situation as "bizarre."

Ukraine has put forth its peace terms, but the Kremlin’s delay in reciprocating at the negotiating table has left Kyiv struggling to prepare adequately for the upcoming discussions.
