Trey McBride: A Rising Star in the NFL Tight End Scene

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – At Tight End University, held in Nashville on Tuesday, Trey McBride stood out as one of the youngest players among 80 tight ends. Despite having only three years of experience with the Arizona Cardinals after being drafted in the second round from Colorado State, McBride has made a significant impact on both his team and the tight end position overall.

This offseason, the Cardinals recognized McBride’s contributions by signing him to a remarkable four-year, $76 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid tight end in the NFL.

A New Era for Tight Ends

While George Kittle of the San Francisco 49ers, a co-founder of Tight End University alongside Travis Kelce and Greg Olsen, soon surpassed McBride with a $76.4 million extension, McBride has quickly established himself as a key player in elite tight end discussions across the league. During the fifth annual summit, Kittle showcased several of McBride’s highlights to emphasize the gold standard for playing the position.

"I think it’s incredible to be recognized by players I’ve admired and modeled my game after," McBride shared with Fox News Digital before participating in a golf outing at Hermitage Golf Course. "Receiving that respect and praise is surreal and a tremendous honor."

A Memorable Moment on the Golf Course

Interestingly, McBride was on the golf course when he learned about his extension. Although he briefly held the title of the highest-paid tight end, he is thrilled to see the position gaining traction in the market. He hopes to inspire his fellow tight ends to pursue even larger contracts.

"Ultimately, we’re trying to elevate the tight end position and help it grow," he explained. "I’m happy for George, and I hope someone surpasses him, allowing everyone to earn more. It’s a critical position that will continue to expand, and I’m proud to help set the bar higher."

Building Trust with Kyler Murray

McBride attributes much of his success to the strong connection he’s built with quarterback Kyler Murray, who relies on him as a crucial asset in the Cardinals’ offense. Last season, McBride recorded an impressive 111 receptions on 147 targets from Murray, totaling 1,146 yards and two touchdowns over 16 games—even making some catches in double or triple coverage.

"It’s an honor to show Kyler that I can make plays for him, no matter how many defenders are on me," McBride said. "Most importantly, I want to earn his trust so he feels confident throwing to me regardless of the coverage. He gives me a chance to make plays."

As he continues to develop this vital connection with Murray, McBride is not just one of the younger players at Tight End University; he’s also a shining example of success in the tight end position, both on and off the field.
