Tragic Boiler Tower Collapse in South Korea: Rescuers Recover Third Body Amid Ongoing Search
A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Ulsan, South Korea, where rescuers have retrieved a third body from the rubble following the collapse of a boiler tower at a thermal power plant. This tragic event occurred while the structure was undergoing preparations for demolition on Thursday.
Rescue teams have been engaged in a meticulous operation to locate those trapped beneath the debris. The first two bodies were discovered on Friday, with a 44-year-old man tragically losing his life while awaiting rescue. Firefighters successfully reached his body early Sunday morning. Additionally, two more workers are presumed dead and remain trapped under the wreckage, while the exact locations of another two workers are still unconfirmed.
The 60-meter (196-foot) tall boiler tower had been out of operation since 2021 after serving for 40 years. At the time of its collapse, the structure was being weakened as part of the demolition process. Rescuers are employing heat sensors and search dogs to aid their efforts, though their operations are complicated by the risk of further collapses.
Kim Jeong-shik, an official from the local fire department, highlighted the dangers at the rescue site, stating, "The area is currently filled with large amounts of asbestos and glass fibers." The confined space necessitates that rescue workers clear debris manually to facilitate the recovery efforts.
In response to this crisis, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has directed officials to mobilize all available personnel and equipment to support the ongoing rescue operations.
