The Melodic Journey of "The Testament of Ann Lee" Competing at the Golden Globe Awards
Prepare for an enchanting auditory experience with Mona Fastvold’s latest historical drama, “The Testament of Ann Lee.” Starring Amanda Seyfried as the pioneering 18th-century religious leader and Shaker founder, this film is set to compete in the musical or comedy categories at the upcoming Golden Globe Awards, as confirmed exclusively by Variety.
Critics and festival audiences alike have praised “The Testament of Ann Lee” as Fastvold’s most ambitious project to date. The film paints a sweeping, musically rich portrait of faith, isolation, and female empowerment. Alongside Seyfried, the diverse ensemble cast features talents such as Lewis Pullman, Thomasin McKenzie, Stacy Martin, Christopher Abbott, and Tim Blake Nelson. The film’s unique blend of music, spirituality, and emotional depth has led the creative team, alongside award strategists, to strategically place it in the musical or comedy category. This choice aims to underscore its innovative musical segments and thematic elements.
Fastvold, along with co-writer and co-producer Brady Corbet, has previously made waves in the industry with their collaboration on “The Brutalist,” which received 10 Academy Award nominations and won three Oscars, including Best Actor for Adrien Brody. Their successful partnership also garnered three Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Director (for Corbet), and Best Actor.
In crafting the film’s soundscape, Fastvold rejoined forces with composer Daniel Blumberg. Together, they worked meticulously from preproduction through sound mixing to create a sound environment deeply rooted in original Shaker hymns. Additionally, Searchlight Pictures has put forth two original songs, “Clothed by the Sun” and “John’s Running Song,” for awards consideration. Both tracks, written and performed by Blumberg, encapsulate the film’s haunting spiritual essence, merging minimalist instrumentation with choral harmonies inspired by authentic Shaker musical traditions.
Amanda Seyfried, a 39-year-old powerhouse in the industry, continues to showcase her versatility. As the Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG Award winner for Hulu’s “The Dropout,” and an Oscar nominee for her role in David Fincher’s “Mank” (2020), Seyfried’s portrayal of Ann Lee is being hailed as one of her best performances yet. Her character’s message of celibacy, equality, and ecstatic worship challenged the conventions of the 18th century. Recently, Seyfried received the Vanguard Award at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival for her remarkable performance.
“The Testament of Ann Lee,” which is a late entry into this year’s awards race, could significantly enhance Seyfried’s prospects in what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive lead actress lineups in years. In the Golden Globe’s musical or comedy lead actress category, she is expected to go up against formidable contenders such as Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked: For Good”), Chase Infiniti (“One Battle After Another”), Kate Hudson (“Song Sung Blue”), and Emma Stone (“Bugonia”).
If Seyfried is nominated alongside Erivo and Hudson for the Academy Awards, it could mark a historic first, as both are also performing in musical roles. Last year, Erivo was nominated for Best Actress for the first installment of “Wicked,” alongside Karla Sofía Gascón for the Spanish-language musical “Emilia Pérez,” marking a rare occurrence in Oscar history.
With “The Testament of Ann Lee,” Fastvold revives a legacy that combines faith and feminism in a haunting, hymn-filled exploration that could very well make its mark in awards history. The film premiered at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on September 1, competing for the prestigious Golden Lion. After being acquired by Searchlight Pictures, it is set for a limited release on December 25. The Golden Globe nominations will be announced on December 8.
