The Impact of "The Pitt" on Healthcare Conversations: A Study by USC Norman Lear Center
In just one season, the Emmy-winning drama "The Pitt" has significantly influenced discussions surrounding healthcare issues. A recent study conducted by the USC Norman Lear Center reveals that the show has notably shifted conversations about critical topics such as organ donation and end-of-life planning.
According to a survey of 1,409 viewers by the Hollywood, Health & Society division of the USC Norman Lear Center, 26.9% of respondents reported feeling more inclined to seek information about organ donation after watching "The Pitt." Additionally, 17.2% shared this information with others, showcasing the show’s potential to inspire action. The findings highlighted a particularly strong impact among Black audiences, an important demographic given that Black patients are often overrepresented on transplant waiting lists while being underrepresented as donors.
The study also examined a poignant storyline in "The Pitt" where family members grapple with end-of-life decisions for a terminally ill father. This narrative resonated with viewers, with approximately 38.8% expressing a desire to explore end-of-life planning options, such as creating a living will or establishing power of attorney. Furthermore, 15.3% of respondents shared this information with friends or family members.
Among the 709 viewers who watched at least three episodes of "The Pitt," nearly 90% acknowledged that the series effectively highlights how systemic issues—like understaffing—impact patient outcomes and conveys the relatable stress experienced by healthcare providers. The authenticity of the show’s storylines, which address challenges like overcrowding and underfunding, was corroborated by conversations with doctors, nurses, and trainees.
Joe Sachs, MD, the executive producer and writer of "The Pitt," stated, “While our primary goal is to create compelling, complex stories, we are also committed to ensuring accuracy in our portrayal of medical topics. As a result, public health education becomes a valuable byproduct of our dramatic storytelling.”
The study’s release coincided with the USC Norman Lear Center Hollywood, Health & Society honors, where "The Pitt" received the Culture of Health Award. Emmy winner Katherine LaNasa presented the award to executive producer and star Noah Wyle, alongside creator and showrunner R. Scott Gemmill and the show’s writing team.
Erica Rosenthal, director of research at the USC Norman Lear Center, emphasized the importance of storytelling in addressing serious issues: “For 25 years, our work has focused on the idea that stories matter. Conventional wisdom suggests that the ‘broccoli’ needs to be hidden in the ‘hamburger’ for audiences to engage. ‘The Pitt’s’ success demonstrates that narratives can prioritize accuracy, highlight systemic challenges through authentic characters, evoke emotions, and inspire real-world action—all while remaining entertaining.”
Other shows honored at the event included "Shrinking," "Dying for Sex," "Paradise," "Matlock," "Grey’s Anatomy," and "Chicago Med," all recognized for their contributions to significant topics like healthcare, racism, and climate change. The event took place at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills, hosted by comedian Carol Leifer, with various presenters highlighting the importance of storytelling in public health.
