Ben Stiller Speaks Out on Comedy’s Challenges During Trump’s Second Term
In a candid interview with Radio Times, actor and director Ben Stiller expressed his concerns about the current state of comedy during Donald Trump’s second term. Known for his roles in iconic films like Zoolander and as the director of Severance, Stiller emphasized the difficulties comedians face today. He passionately urged his fellow comedians to continue pushing boundaries and speaking out against injustices.
“We live in a world where taking risks in comedy has become increasingly challenging,” Stiller remarked. “This is especially evident in our country right now. However, it’s crucial for comedians to keep doing what they do best—speaking truth to power and exercising their freedom of expression. That’s what truly matters.”
Stiller’s comments come in light of recent events, including Disney’s temporary suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel after his remarks regarding the death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. Stiller was among several prominent figures in Hollywood who publicly opposed Kimmel’s suspension, taking to social media to declare, “This isn’t right.”
Additionally, Stiller has faced pressure to edit out a cameo by Donald Trump from his 2001 film Zoolander. In a memorable red carpet scene, Trump can be heard stating, “Without Derek Zoolander, male modeling wouldn’t be what it is today.” Despite suggestions to remove the cameo, Stiller stands firm, stating, “That was a moment in time that happened, and it shouldn’t be erased.”
Stiller’s comments come as he promotes his new Apple TV documentary, Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost, which pays tribute to his parents, comedians Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara. This documentary reflects on their lives and contributions to the world of comedy, further highlighting the importance of authenticity and resilience in the industry today.
