Exciting News: The Social Network Sequel Takes Shape with Rising Stars!
In a thrilling development for fans of the original film, it appears that a sequel to The Social Network is finally gaining momentum. Acclaimed screenwriter Aaron Sorkin is reportedly eyeing two talented actors to lead The Social Network Part II: Oscar winner Mikey Madison and Emmy winner Jeremy Allen White. While discussions are still in the early stages—particularly regarding budget and other logistical details—sources indicate that these two actors are Sorkin’s top choices for key roles.
Although no formal offers have been extended to Madison or White yet, insiders suggest that Sorkin is eager to work with them once the necessary arrangements are made. Sony Pictures, the studio behind the film, has yet to provide any comments on the project.
According to a report by Deadline in June, Sorkin will both direct and write the sequel after taking time to explore the best narrative angle for this new chapter in the story of Facebook. Unlike a traditional sequel, this film will serve as a follow-up to the 2010 classic, which delved into the origins of the world’s largest social media platform.
The screenplay for this upcoming film draws inspiration from The Facebook Files, a groundbreaking series of articles published by Jeff Horowitz in October 2021. These articles revealed the internal workings and various controversies surrounding Facebook. In an ideal casting scenario, White would portray Horowitz, while Madison would take on the role of the whistleblower featured in the series.
Since the announcement of the sequel, there’s been a surge of interest from actors eager to collaborate with Sorkin, especially considering the success of the original film’s ensemble cast. As for the character of Mark Zuckerberg, it’s still unclear what role the CEO of Meta will play in the new film or if Jesse Eisenberg will reprise his Oscar-nominated role. While Eisenberg’s return remains uncertain, his performance in the first film was widely praised.
Released in 2010 and based on Ben Mezrich’s The Accidental Billionaires, the original The Social Network was a critical and commercial success, grossing $226 million worldwide and earning eight Academy Award nominations, of which it won three, including Best Adapted Screenplay for Sorkin.
Sorkin has expressed interest in exploring a sequel for years but struggled to find the right approach—until the events of January 6, 2021, provided him with new inspiration. He believes that Facebook played a significant role in shaping the political landscape, but he has clarified that the upcoming film won’t focus solely on January 6. Instead, it will address broader themes, including the impact of Facebook on the 2020 election, its influence on teenagers, and its repercussions in global contexts.
For Mikey Madison, this project would mark a significant milestone in her career following her Oscar win for her breakout performance in Anora. Jeremy Allen White is also in the spotlight, as he prepares to portray rock legend Bruce Springsteen in the upcoming biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere.
Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting project continues to evolve!
