Jim Ratcliffe Defends the Glazers Amid Manchester United’s Ongoing Challenges

In a surprising turn of events, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, has come to the defense of the Glazer family’s controversial ownership of the club. Since their leveraged buyout in 2005, the American owners have faced considerable backlash from fans, primarily due to the staggering debt of £725 million that now plagues the club.

Back in 2004, various supporter groups vehemently opposed the Glazers’ takeover, fearing the impact it would have on the club’s financial health and overall performance. Fast forward to early 2024, and Ratcliffe made headlines by acquiring a 27.7% stake in Manchester United through a $1.2 billion deal, which included negotiations with the Glazer family. As the CEO of Ineos, Ratcliffe has taken the reins of football operations and strategic decisions at the club.

During a recent appearance on The Times’ Business Podcast, Ratcliffe shared his insights about the Glazers, stating, "They get a bad rap… but they are really nice people and they are really passionate about the club." This comment reflects his belief that while the Glazers have faced significant criticism, their commitment to Manchester United should not be overlooked.

When discussing his relationship with the Glazer family, Ratcliffe emphasized the geographical distance that complicates their management of such a vast entity. "We’re local, and they’re the other side of the pond. That’s a long way away to try and manage a football club as big and complex as Manchester United. We’re here with feet on the ground."

Since taking charge of football operations, Ratcliffe has yet to reverse the club’s declining performance on the pitch. Last season, Manchester United finished a disappointing 15th in the Premier League, marking their worst season in the league’s history. One of Ratcliffe’s notable decisions has been the appointment of Ruben Amorim as head coach, a choice that has come under scrutiny given the team’s ongoing struggles.

Despite the challenges, Ratcliffe has dismissed rumors of parting ways with Amorim. When asked if the Glazers would instruct him to dismiss the Portuguese manager, Ratcliffe firmly stated that such a scenario is unlikely.

Looking ahead, Manchester United is set to face off against Liverpool away on Sunday, October 19, with kickoff scheduled for 4:30 PM UK time. As the club navigates these turbulent times, all eyes will be on Ratcliffe and his efforts to restore Manchester United to its former glory.
