The excitement surrounding Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders has reached new heights following a standout performance in his preseason debut. In a decisive victory over the Panthers, Sanders completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and threw two touchdown passes, leading the Browns to a 30-10 win. This impressive stat line has sparked discussions among sports analysts about his potential as the team’s starting quarterback in the upcoming regular season.
ESPN NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins even drew a notable comparison between Sanders and LeBron James, who made waves when he entered the NBA as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers. "Shedeur’s preseason game felt like a playoff opener," Perkins shared on social media. "This is the most star power for a rookie in Cleveland since LeBron!"
While LeBron was heralded as the "King" and compared to Michael Jordan before even stepping on the court, Sanders’ journey to the NFL has been quite different. Selected in the fifth round from Colorado, he had a remarkable final season, racking up 4,134 passing yards and 37 touchdown passes. However, he still faces stiff competition to secure a spot on the Browns’ roster. Alongside Sanders, the team features veteran quarterbacks Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, as well as fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. Additionally, Deshaun Watson remains on injured reserve after suffering an Achilles injury last season.
As the preseason progresses, time is running out for quarterbacks to distinguish themselves and cement their places on the team.
