Scarlett Johansson Discusses the Challenges of Long-Term Roles in Marvel Films
Scarlett Johansson, renowned for her portrayal of Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) over the past 11 years, recently opened up about the unique challenges she faced while filming ensemble films. In a candid conversation with her Black Widow co-star David Harbour for Interview magazine, Johansson reflected on the complexities of playing the same character for such an extended period.
“Some Marvel films offered more depth for my character than others,” Johansson shared. “For instance, in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, my dynamic with Chris Evans was truly engaging. However, in some other movies, the cast was so large and the plot so intricate that I often felt like my character was just a tool to advance the story. Committing to five and a half months of that can be tough. It may seem trivial, but when your identity becomes intertwined with your role, and you’re not participating in stimulating work, it can leave you feeling a bit restricted.”
David Harbour, who portrayed Alexei in the 2021 film Black Widow, empathized with Johansson’s perspective. He has been playing Hopper in Netflix’s Stranger Things for nearly a decade, with the fifth and final season set to premiere later this year. “Initially, I loved every moment,” he said. “Friends who had been in long-running TV shows warned me that by seasons three or four, I might feel differently. I dismissed their concerns, thinking I would always enjoy it. But eventually, the desire for fresh challenges emerges. After ten years, the question becomes, ‘How much more story is there?’ You begin repeating similar themes, and it makes you crave the opportunity to explore new roles.”
During their discussion, Harbour also mentioned that Johansson had once been credited as an executive producer on his upcoming film, Thunderbolts. “You’re essentially a key player in this movie, and you were initially listed as a producer. Congratulations!” he said. Johansson clarified, “I requested my credit to be removed because I wasn’t actively involved,” suggesting her credit was likely a formality due to contractual obligations.
In Black Widow, Johansson’s character and Florence Pugh’s Yelena made their MCU debuts before leading the cast of Thunderbolts. The film also features a star-studded lineup, including Sebastian Stan, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lewis Pullman, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen, Olga Kurylenko, and Geraldine Viswanathan.
