San Francisco Bookstore Removes Harry Potter Series Amid Controversy Over J.K. Rowling’s Views

In a bold move, a San Francisco bookstore has decided to pull the beloved "Harry Potter" series from its shelves, citing author J.K. Rowling’s advocacy for women’s rights within the ongoing transgender discourse. Booksmith, located on Haight Street, made the announcement on June 10, explaining their stance against the author’s recent initiatives.

Rowling has committed to using her earnings from the "Harry Potter" franchise to establish a legal fund aimed at supporting women in their fight for "sex-based rights in the workplace, public life, and protected female spaces." In response to this, Booksmith released a notice both in-store and on social media, emphasizing their decision to distance themselves from Rowling’s views.

"In May 2025, J.K. Rowling announced her intention to create the ‘J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund,’ which focuses on advocating for women’s rights while opposing certain transgender rights," Booksmith stated. "With this announcement, we have chosen to stop carrying her books."

The bookstore’s notice continues, "While we may not fully understand the implications of her new fund, we are clear that we do not want to be associated with it." The staff, who identify as queer booksellers, acknowledged their own formative experiences with fantasy literature, stating, "If you or someone you love wishes to explore the world of ‘Harry Potter,’ we recommend purchasing used copies."

Additionally, Booksmith has curated a list of alternative fantasy novels that align more closely with their values, making them available on their website.

On the bookstore’s homepage, they also call for donations to their "Books, Not Bans" campaign, which aims to distribute "queer, affirmative, and essential" books to communities nationwide.

J.K. Rowling’s recent comments have sparked significant backlash from transgender activists, as she has openly expressed concerns that women’s rights are being undermined by the transgender movement. While her fund does not directly address transgender rights, it has become a point of contention in public discussions.

Prominent figures like musician Boy George and actor Pedro Pascal have also voiced their opinions on Rowling’s views, with Pascal labeling her a "bully" on social media, especially given his personal connection to the transgender community.

As this debate continues to unfold, both Rowling and Booksmith have yet to respond to requests for further comment.
