Ivan Ljubicic Responds to John McEnroe’s Controversial Comments on Nadal
In a recent exchange of words, Ivan Ljubicic, the former coach of tennis legend Roger Federer, has expressed strong disapproval of John McEnroe’s remarks regarding the capabilities of rising stars Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz against a prime Rafael Nadal. McEnroe, a three-time Wimbledon champion, suggested that both Sinner and Alcaraz would have the upper hand over Nadal, who boasts an impressive 22 Grand Slam titles.
Following a stellar performance that culminated in a victory over Alcaraz, Sinner currently holds four Grand Slam titles, while the 22-year-old Alcaraz has claimed five, with only the Australian Open missing from his impressive collection.
In his analysis, McEnroe stated, "If you look at Sinner and Alcaraz bringing their A-game, you could argue that they would be favored to beat Nadal on clay, even at his best." He further remarked, "However, I don’t believe either of them will reach 20 or 24 titles, as that plateau is incredibly challenging to achieve in the current competitive landscape."
Ljubicic, however, disagrees with McEnroe’s assertion, labeling it "nonsense." He emphasized, "People always exaggerate. McEnroe claimed Nadal wouldn’t stand a chance against these players, but we haven’t even seen the best of Alcaraz and Sinner yet. They still have plenty of room for improvement. The next generation often raises the bar, but I don’t think they’re ahead of Nadal just yet."
Reflecting on the brilliance of past matches, Ljubicic noted, "When I watch matches from 2005, 2008, 2012, and 2015 featuring Roger and Rafa, it’s clear that the level of tennis was already extraordinary."
Nadal, who dominated the French Open with 14 of his Grand Slam titles, retired from professional tennis last year. He also secured two Wimbledon trophies, with his first victory coming against Federer in the 2008 final after previously losing to him in two finals. Despite missing Wimbledon in 2009 due to injury, Nadal bounced back to win his second title at the tournament in 2010 against Tomas Berdych.
Recently, Nadal addressed his absence from Wimbledon this year, sharing, "Honestly, I don’t regret not being there because my life has changed. I’m enjoying the tournament from a different perspective. I hope to return to Wimbledon in the future, but for now, I’m in a different phase of my life. After retiring, I had a rough month where I could barely walk, but I’m feeling better than I could have imagined."
