Rob Cross Breaks Silence on Tax Issues Ahead of US Darts Masters Title Defense

Former world darts champion Rob Cross has publicly addressed his five-year director ban and a staggering £450,000 tax debt, just in time for his title defense at the US Darts Masters in New York. The 34-year-old athlete expressed regret over the situation, admitting it was "not my proudest moment."

Cross’s company, Rob Cross Darts Limited, fell into liquidation after failing to pay over £450,000 in taxes. Between March 2020 and November 2023, Cross withdrew more than £300,000 that was intended for HMRC and other creditors. In a candid interview with Online Darts, the 2018 world champion stated, "I’ve done wrong, and I hold my hands up to it."

Upon entering liquidation in November 2023, Cross’s company owed a total of £579,805, which included £403,896 in corporation tax, £49,071 in VAT, and £12,436 in PAYE. As a result of these financial troubles, he has been disqualified from serving as a company director for five years, until June 2030.

In a bid to address his financial obligations, Cross entered an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) last year, allowing him to repay the debt based on his earnings from darts in the coming years. He revealed that the situation has been ongoing for two years, reflecting, "It’s cost me a lot of money to get there. This isn’t new news to me."

Rob Cross is determined to make things right, stating, "Going down this route with the IVA means I’m not running away from my responsibilities." He emphasized that the UK government opted for a solution that would prevent bankruptcy, which he believes was the right choice.

In his heartfelt apology, Cross addressed his fans directly: "I’m sorry to let all of my fans down. I will get it sorted and get back on my feet. Hopefully, it won’t linger over me for the rest of my life."

Despite these controversies, Cross remains focused on his upcoming defense of the US Darts Masters title, having taken a month-long break to recharge. "Winning it last year was very, very special," he reflected, expressing confidence in his mental readiness and new practice routines with different darts.
