Riley Gaines Responds to AOC’s Criticism in Heated Podcast Exchange
In the latest episode of her OutKick podcast, "Gaines for Girls," Riley Gaines fired back at Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., following a recent social media clash. The tension began when AOC suggested that if Gaines had channeled her energy into swimming faster, she might have secured a better finish than fifth place at the 2022 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships.
Gaines, who proudly identifies as part of the "roughly 2%" of athletes who compete at the Division I level, highlighted the rarity of her achievement, noting that only eight women reach the finals and earn All-American status in their events. Interestingly, she tied with Lia Thomas, a transgender swimmer who had previously won the national title in the 400-meter freestyle.
In her response, Gaines pointed out the disparity in performance, stating, "If they think fifth place is bad, what do they think about the 462nd place? Because that’s where Lia Thomas ranked among men just a year earlier." She criticized the narrative that women should not express anger over their treatment in sports, asserting, "This comment is not only snide; it reflects a tired viewpoint often echoed by the Democratic Party and its supporters. It suggests that women should remain silent when our opportunities are compromised."
Gaines continued to address the condescending notion that women simply need to work harder to compete with men, calling it "dismissive and sexist." She noted, "Such comments are often directed at women because they feel safe making them."
In addition to her critique of AOC, Gaines expressed her frustration at the congresswoman’s stance on various issues, declaring that Ocasio-Cortez seems "hellbent on being on the wrong side of every 80-20 issue," including border security, crime, and the participation of men in women’s sports.
After challenging AOC to a debate on "The Ingraham Angle," Gaines received a dismissive response from the congresswoman, who suggested she should "get a real job." Gaines clarified that she is indeed employed, emphasizing her role as a mother to her newborn daughter.
In a poignant remark, Gaines stated, "If AOC had a little girl, she might feel differently about a grown man exposing himself to her daughter." She concluded by expressing her belief that Ocasio-Cortez has shown herself to be "self-absorbed and misogynistic."
