Daniel Craig Returns as Detective Benoit Blanc in the Upcoming Knives Out Mystery: Wake Up Dead Man
In an exciting development for fans of the Knives Out franchise, writer-director Rian Johnson has announced that Daniel Craig’s beloved character, Detective Benoit Blanc, will be diving back into the roots of the genre in the next installment, titled Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Johnson shared intriguing details about the film’s tone, hinting at a “gothic” atmosphere that sets it apart from its predecessor, Glass Onion.
Scheduled for release on December 12, Wake Up Dead Man promises to deliver a fresh take on the mystery genre. Johnson explained, "It’s incredibly different from Glass Onion. We released a teaser trailer a month ago, and it showcases a much more grounded and gothic tone. This film aligns more closely with the original Knives Out, harkening back to the genre’s true origins, which extend beyond Agatha Christie to the works of Edgar Allan Poe."
Johnson elaborated on his decision to shift the film’s vibe, noting that Glass Onion had a campier approach compared to the 2019 film that kicked off the series. He emphasized his commitment to keeping his projects innovative, stating, "If I feel like I’m just repeating myself, I know the audience will see through that. After spending three years on a project with a specific tone, it’s like eating the same lunch every day. I crave the excitement of creating something new."
When asked about the future of the Netflix mystery film series, Johnson expressed his openness to creating more installments but admitted he doesn’t have a concrete idea at this time. "I feel great! Each time, I take a risk that I think might not work," he said regarding potential future films. "The moment you think you know how to do this, it leads to stagnation. So, I’m thrilled to keep exploring. While I don’t have a new concept right now, I’m eager to continue as long as I can."
Although plot details for Wake Up Dead Man remain closely guarded, audiences can look forward to the return of Detective Blanc as he navigates yet another intricate murder mystery. The film will feature a star-studded cast, including Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church.
