Rian Johnson’s Upcoming "Knives Out" Film: A Return to Classic Murder Mysteries

Rian Johnson, the creative mind behind the popular "Knives Out" franchise, recently shared exciting details about the third installment in the series, titled Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. During his appearance at Deadline’s Contenders London event, Johnson revealed that this new film will embrace a more traditional Agatha Christie-style mystery compared to its predecessors.

A Traditional Murder Mystery Structure

Johnson emphasized that Wake Up Dead Man adheres closely to the classic narrative structure often found in Agatha Christie novels. "This movie has a more traditional murder mystery framework," he explained. "In the first act, you meet all the suspects and the protagonist, who isn’t the detective. Then the murder occurs, and the detective arrives on the scene." This approach marks a shift from the more unconventional storytelling seen in Glass Onion and the original Knives Out.

Daniel Craig Returns as Benoit Blanc

In this thrilling new chapter, Daniel Craig reprises his role as the brilliant private detective Benoit Blanc. This time, he is faced with a darker mystery, weaving in themes of religious intrigue. The story centers around the character Jud Duplencity, played by Josh O’Connor, who is a priest stationed at a remote outpost in Upstate New York. Duplencity becomes Blanc’s trusted ally as they navigate the complex layers of the plot.

Collaborating with Talented Cast

O’Connor expressed his excitement about working alongside Craig, noting that the James Bond star is “so willing to share his expertise.” He humorously added that Craig brings a "goofball" energy to the set, showcasing his playful side.

Producer Ram Bergman revealed that preparations for the film began even before the script was finalized, thanks to Johnson’s clear vision for the project. Filming took place in London, where Johnson felt at ease due to his experience with Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi. "The film primarily unfolds in an old stone church in a quaint town, and there are plenty of those in the UK," Johnson remarked. "We truly enjoyed working with British crews during our time in London."

Release Dates and Star-Studded Cast

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is set for a limited theatrical release on November 26, followed by its streaming debut on December 12 on Netflix. The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church.

With its traditional mystery elements and a stellar cast, Rian Johnson’s latest film promises to be an enthralling addition to the Knives Out franchise. Fans and mystery enthusiasts alike are eagerly anticipating its release!
