Houston Police Identify Man Who Made Death Threats Against Astros Pitcher Lance McCullers Jr.
In a troubling incident last month, Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. received death threats following a disappointing performance against the Cincinnati Reds. Authorities in Texas have identified a man from overseas as the individual behind these alarming threats. According to a spokesperson from the Houston Police Department, the suspect was intoxicated and reportedly lost money betting on the Astros when he took to social media to express his frustration.
The spokesperson revealed that after investigators interviewed the man, he expressed remorse for his actions and requested that his apology be conveyed to the McCullers family. "He stated he had lost money betting on the Astros game and was frustrated and inebriated when he lashed out on social media," the spokesperson explained.
In light of the threats, the Houston Astros organization has taken significant measures to ensure the safety of McCullers and his family by providing them with 24-hour security. The team has also reached out to both MLB security and the Houston Police Department regarding these serious concerns.
McCullers, who has recently returned to the field after two years sidelined by injuries, shared the emotional toll this situation has taken on him and his family. He recounted a conversation with his 5-year-old daughter, who innocently asked, “Daddy, like, what is threats? Who wants to hurt us? Who wants to hurt me?” He admitted that explaining the situation to her has been incredibly challenging.
"This has been the worst thing that’s happened during my career," McCullers said. "People should want us to succeed. We want to succeed, but it shouldn’t come at a cost to our families. Our kids shouldn’t feel unsafe in their own homes or at games."
As of now, the man who made the threats has not been publicly named since no charges have been filed; however, police have confirmed that the case is still open.
