Novak Djokovic’s French Open Journey: A Possible Farewell?

Novak Djokovic, the legendary 24-time Grand Slam champion, may have played his final match at the iconic French Open. This past weekend, the Serbian tennis star aimed to extend his remarkable legacy at Roland Garros but fell short against Italy’s Jannik Sinner, losing in straight sets during the semifinals.

As Djokovic, 38, left the court at Philippe-Chatrier, emotions ran high. He kissed his hand and touched the clay, signaling a poignant moment in his storied career. Reflecting on the match, he hinted that this could be his last appearance at this prestigious tournament.

"I mean, this could have been the last match I ever played here, so I don’t know. That’s why I was a bit more emotional at the end," Djokovic shared. "If this was my farewell at Roland Garros, it was a wonderful experience, thanks to the incredible atmosphere and support from the crowd."

In a moment of sportsmanship, Sinner and Djokovic exchanged handshakes after the match, marking the end of a significant chapter in Djokovic’s career as he remains the last active player from the "Big Three."

When asked about his future, Djokovic expressed his desire to keep competing. "Do I wish to play more? Yes, I do. But will I be able to play here in 12 months? I don’t know," he said. "I didn’t say it was my last match; I just said it could have been."

Looking ahead, Djokovic confirmed his plans to compete at Wimbledon, where he last claimed victory in 2022. Although he faced challenges last year, missing out on a Grand Slam title for the first time in seven years, he remains determined. "I want to play Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, those two for sure. For the rest, I’m not so sure," he stated.
