Summer Box Office Wrap-Up: Universal’s "Nobody 2" Takes Center Stage
As summer winds down, Universal Pictures is making waves with the release of "Nobody 2," starring Bob Odenkirk. The highly anticipated action flick raked in $1.3 million during its previews yesterday, screening in 2,800 theaters starting at 2 PM. With a production budget of $25 million, "Nobody 2" is projected to launch with over $10 million at the box office, though it faces tough competition from New Line’s "Weapons," which is expected to dominate with a $20 million+ opening.
Box Office Performance: "Weapons" vs. "Sinners" and "Get Out"
Directed by Zach Cregger, "Weapons" is wrapping up its first week with an impressive $64 million, marking a -17% drop compared to the $77.5 million earned by "Sinners" in its debut week. However, it outperforms "Get Out," which opened with $49.8 million. The trajectory for "Weapons" remains uncertain—will it experience a modest decline like "Get Out" (-15%) or "Sinners" (-5%)? We’ll know more as we delve into Saturday’s box office numbers.
Interestingly, "Sinners" saw a 14% bump in its second Saturday, while "Get Out" experienced a 9% drop. On Thursday, "Weapons" earned $4.06 million, down 9% from Wednesday’s $4.4 million.
"Nobody 2" Preview Insights
Unlike its predecessor, "Nobody," which opened to $6.8 million without any previews due to the reopening of cinemas in major cities like NYC and LA only a few weeks earlier, "Nobody 2" is following a similar preview pattern as Lionsgate’s "Den of Thieves: Pantera," which posted $1.35 million before achieving a $5.7 million Friday and a $15 million opening weekend.
Directed by Timo Tjahjanto, "Nobody 2" builds on the groundwork laid by Ilya Naishuller in the first installment. The screenplay, penned by Derek Kolstad and Aaron Rabin, stays true to the original characters, and the film has garnered strong ratings: 82% certified fresh from critics and 92% audience approval on Rotten Tomatoes—very similar to the first movie’s ratings of 84% and 94%.
