Tragic Crowd Surge Claims Nine Lives at Hindu Temple in Southern India
In a heartbreaking incident, nine people lost their lives during a crowd surge at the Swamy Venkateswara Temple in southern India. This tragic event occurred as thousands of devotees gathered to celebrate a significant day in the Hindu calendar, resulting in a chaotic scene that left many injured.
The temple, which has a maximum capacity of 3,000, saw an overwhelming turnout of approximately 25,000 visitors on Saturday. An initial investigation revealed that a malfunctioning iron grille, designed to manage the flow of worshippers, collapsed, triggering the dangerous surge.
Swapnil Dinkar Pundkar, a senior official in the local government, reported that the situation was dire, with concerns of more casualties as the emergency unfolded. "Initially, we had reports of seven fatalities, but unfortunately, two more individuals have since succumbed to their injuries, and the condition of two others remains critical," he stated. The victims included eight women and a child.
Disturbing footage from the scene captured the chaos, showing bystanders rushing to assist those who had fainted in the crush and were struggling to breathe. In the wake of this tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow and condolences to the families affected.
