In a recent analysis, NFL insider Ian Rapoport raised concerns about the mounting pressure facing Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as the team navigates a pivotal moment in their season. Speaking on "NFL GameDay Morning," Rapoport suggested that Tagovailoa could be at risk of losing his starting position before the conclusion of the 2025 season.
"My understanding is that the Dolphins may consider replacing him as quarterback," Rapoport stated. "He’s currently playing to secure his job, leading the league with 11 interceptions. If this trend continues, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them turn to one of his backups later this season."
Tagovailoa’s potential replacements include Zach Wilson and rookie sensation Quinn Ewers. The Dolphins recently faced a tough loss, falling 28-6 to the Baltimore Ravens. In that game, Lamar Jackson shone with four touchdown passes, while Tagovailoa completed 25 of 40 passes for 261 yards, but also threw an interception and was sacked twice.
The Dolphins’ disappointing performance has already led to significant organizational changes, including the departure of general manager Chris Grier. This shake-up could trigger a series of strategic moves as the NFL trade deadline approaches. However, Rapoport noted that trading star wide receiver Jaylen Waddle would require a substantial offer.
Currently in his sixth season with Miami, Tagovailoa has recorded 1,779 passing yards and 15 touchdown passes this year. Unfortunately, he has lost key players, including star wide receiver Tyreek Hill for the season, and Darren Waller, who was emerging as a crucial target, is also sidelined due to injury.
The former Alabama standout signed a lucrative four-year contract extension worth approximately $212.4 million before the 2024 season, which includes a potential exit option after the 2026 season.
