Cleveland Browns Coach Kevin Stefanski Weighs In on Quarterback Battle After Shedeur Sanders’ Stellar Preseason Debut
Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski has stirred excitement around the team’s quarterback situation following Shedeur Sanders’ standout performance in his preseason debut. During a recent training camp press conference, Stefanski was questioned about the possibility of naming a Week 1 starter after the upcoming preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
When asked about his decision-making timeline, Stefanski replied, "Iโm not there yet," indicating that he needed more time to evaluate the situation. He also refrained from confirming whether Sanders would start against the Eagles, stating, "By Wednesday or Thursday, I’ll have a better feel for the game and how weโre going to handle that, and I’ll update you guys, but not there yet," according to ESPN.
In addition to Sanders, rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel has returned to team drills, aiming to secure a spot on the active roster as the season approaches. Meanwhile, fellow quarterback Kenny Pickett is still on the mend from a hamstring injury.
Sanders sparked interest among fans and analysts alike after throwing for 138 yards and two touchdowns on 14 completions during the Browns’ victory over the Carolina Panthers, where they won 30-10. Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco appears to be the frontrunner for the starting position due to his extensive experience and familiarity with Stefanskiโs offensive scheme. However, Sandersโ impressive debut certainly raised eyebrows and added a layer of competition.
Currently, the Browns have five active quarterbacks in training camp, while Deshaun Watson remains on injured reserve recovering from a torn Achilles tendon.
