Nelly Furtado Takes a Break from Performing Amid Body-Shaming Controversy
Nelly Furtado, the Grammy-winning sensation, is stepping back from live performances, announcing her decision on social media amidst a wave of online body-shaming. In a heartfelt Instagram post commemorating the 25th anniversary of her debut album, Whoa, Nelly!, she shared her plans to focus on personal and creative pursuits that resonate more with her current life phase.
"I have decided to step away from performance for the foreseeable future and explore other creative avenues," Furtado wrote. "I’ve greatly enjoyed my career and still have a passion for songwriting, which I’ve always viewed as a cherished hobby turned career."
The Canadian singer, celebrated for iconic early 2000s tracks such as "I’m Like a Bird" and "Promiscuous," reflected on her journey over the last quarter-century. "Twenty-five years ago, my first album was released. I still remember being 20 and preparing for my first show at Lilith Fair, wearing a pink dress and sparkly platform shoes I bought at a local store," she reminisced. "It’s incredible to see my music reaching new generations of fans."
Furtado’s announcement comes shortly after she addressed online critics regarding her bold fashion choices at Manchester Pride. During the event, she wore an oversized white T-shirt featuring a cartoon image of a woman in a crop top and mini skirt, which many interpreted as a response to body-shamers. In previous statements, she emphasized the importance of self-acceptance and confidence.
This summer, she also shared a radiant selfie in an orange bikini, highlighting her journey towards "body neutrality" as part of her wellness mindset for 2025. "I realized the aesthetic pressures of my work while also experiencing newfound levels of self-love and confidence," she noted.
In addition to addressing body image issues, Furtado has taken a stand against online scammers profiting from her name. "I had to take legal action against individuals selling services based on health and beauty myths about me," she stated, clarifying that she has never undergone any cosmetic procedures except for veneers on her teeth.
Furtado attributes her natural glow to effective skincare routines rather than cosmetic enhancements, stating, "I stick with my long-time facialist and the serums and creams I’ve used since I was 20."
As Nelly Furtado embarks on this new chapter, fans eagerly await her next creative endeavors while supporting her journey toward self-acceptance and personal growth.
