Epic Comeback: Rockies Triumph Over Pirates in Record-Setting Game

In an unforgettable showdown at Coors Field, the Colorado Rockies staged one of the most thrilling comebacks of the season, defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates 17-16 on Friday. The game started with a dramatic twist, as the Rockies found themselves trailing 9-0 just after the first inning.

The Pirates wasted no time exploiting the Rockies’ starting pitcher, Antonio Senzatela, who allowed eight runs before recording only two outs. Center fielder Oneil Cruz delivered a game-changing grand slam, putting the Pirates ahead 5-0 early on.

A Rocky Start Turns into a Stunning Finish

After Senzatela was relieved by Carson Palmquist, the Pirates continued their offensive onslaught, with Palmquist surrendering a three-run homer to Andrew McCutchen, extending the lead to 9-0. However, the Rockies refused to back down. They managed to score one run in the first inning and chipped away further with three runs in the third, narrowing the gap to 9-4.

The Pirates added three more runs in the fourth inning, pushing the score to 12-4. Yet, the Rockies responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth, making it 12-6. The back-and-forth battle continued, with the Pirates scoring three runs in the fifth inning to lead 15-6, only for the Rockies to answer with four runs, closing the score to 15-10.

The Final Act: Rockies Surge in the Ninth Inning

The Pirates managed to extend their lead to 16-10 in the sixth inning, but the Rockies began their comeback in the eighth, scoring two runs to cut the deficit to 16-12. The ninth inning saw the Rockies mounting a serious challenge. Catcher Hunter Goodman hit a solo home run, bringing the score to 16-13.

Following Goodman’s homer, left fielder Jordan Beck got on base with a walk, and first baseman Warming Bernabel hit a triple, scoring Beck and narrowing the score to 16-14. Second baseman Thairo Estrada then singled, bringing Bernabel home and making it 16-15.

With Estrada on base as the tying run, center fielder Brenton Doyle stepped up and launched a two-run home run, sealing the game at 17-16 and delivering a stunning walk-off victory for the Rockies.

A Moment to Remember

"Honestly, I’m speechless," Doyle expressed in a post-game interview. "I’m so proud of everyone in this clubhouse for never giving up. What a win!"

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Rockies made history by becoming the first team since the 2006 Cleveland Indians to win after giving up nine runs in the first inning. That game saw the Indians rally from a 10-1 deficit to defeat the Kansas City Royals.

Doyle reflected on the team’s resilience, saying, "Getting down nine in the first, it’s tough to come back from, but we kept the energy high. We kept the fight in us. Oh my God, what a game."
