Charlize Theron Champions Immigration, LGBTQ, and Women’s Rights at CTAOP Block Party

At the fifth annual Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Program (CTAOP) Block Party held at Universal Studios, Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron delivered powerful remarks on critical issues such as immigration, LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, and the alarming cuts to foreign aid. “The world feels like it’s burning because it is,” Theron passionately stated. “In Los Angeles, across the U.S., and around the globe, we are rapidly regressing. Immigration policies are tearing families apart, women’s rights are eroding daily, and the lives of queer and trans individuals are increasingly marginalized. Gender-based violence is on the rise, and this isn’t just a political issue—it’s personal. We must take a stand.”

Theron highlighted the dire consequences of foreign aid cuts, particularly on HIV and AIDS programs in her native South Africa. “These cuts have paralyzed vital health initiatives,” she warned. “The impact is not just detrimental; it’s life-threatening. Many lives have already been lost, and the rate of suffering is alarming. It’s heartbreaking to witness such unnecessary pain."

While Theron refrained from mentioning President Trump directly, she criticized the administration’s commitment to slashing foreign aid. However, she emphasized her hope for change, stating, “We must not overlook the resistance that is rising. There is hope and strength in our collective action—organizing, protesting, voting, and caring for one another. We refuse to accept this as the new normal. The spirit of resistance, justice, and mutual care is what fuels the work of CTAOP. While our focus is on the youth in southern Africa, our message is universal: every life matters. Everyone deserves to be healthy, safe, and recognized.”

Founded 18 years ago, CTAOP aims to uplift young people in South Africa. To date, the initiative has reached over 4.5 million youth and allocated $15 million to organizations across southern Africa. On the red carpet earlier in the evening, Theron expressed the urgency of the situation, stating, “The implications of these budget cuts are devastating. Less than one percent of the budget is at stake, yet millions of lives are on the line. This event feels more significant than ever.”

Theron also shared her commitment to lobbying elected officials for change. “We actively engage with them,” she noted. “Many are listening and understand our concerns.” The evening featured a live auction of luxury items and experiences, along with a performance by singer Reneé Rapp, further highlighting the community’s commitment to supporting youth and advocating for critical social issues.
