Netflix’s latest limited series, "Death by Lightning," draws inspiration from Candice Millard’s acclaimed 2011 novel, “Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President.” This gripping four-part series delves into the life of President James Garfield, the often-overlooked 20th president of the United States, and the man responsible for his assassination, Charles Guiteau. Crafted by Mike Makowsky of “Bad Education” fame and executive produced by the renowned “Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, "Death by Lightning" serves not only as a powerful historical narrative but also as a cautionary tale.
The series opens in 1969 at the Army Medical Museum, where startled workers discover a jar that has fallen from a dusty box. They soon realize it contains the brain of Charles J. Guiteau, played by Matthew Macfadyen, which had been forgotten for nearly a century. The story then rewinds to 1880, introducing us to a troubled Guiteau, who is finishing another stint in prison for fraud and evading arrest. Meanwhile, in Ohio, Civil War veteran and Congressman James Garfield, portrayed by Michael Shannon, is reluctantly called to the Republican National Convention in Chicago to support his friend, Congressman James Blaine (Bradley Whitford), for the presidency. Despite his initial hesitation, Garfield’s stirring speech leads to his unexpected nomination, leaving his wife, Crete (Betty Gilpin), in shock as supporters flock to their home.
As Garfield navigates his newfound political journey, he aligns with Chester Arthur (Nick Offerman), who becomes his running mate, and the influential Senator Roscoe Conkling (Shea Whigham). Meanwhile, Guiteau becomes increasingly obsessed with Garfield, abandoning his plan to start a newspaper in favor of inserting himself into Garfield’s campaign and administration.
"Death by Lightning" intricately portrays the lives of two men driven by vastly different motivations. Just a century after the founding of the United States, the highest office was marred by corruption and greed, with the legacies of slavery and the Civil War still haunting the nation. As viewers witness the struggles of powerful men hoarding influence and opportunity, it becomes clear that many of these issues persist in contemporary America.
For history enthusiasts, the series is a visual and emotional treat, featuring outstanding performances and meticulous attention to detail. However, the four-episode format may feel excessive, particularly as it spends considerable time on Guiteau’s troubled psyche. Macfadyen’s portrayal of Guiteau as a deeply disturbed individual, shaped by a traumatic childhood and poor mental health care, is commendable. Yet, the drawn-out exploration of his madness detracts from the overall narrative impact. More fleshed-out backstories, such as his experiences in a sex cult and his relationship with his sister Franny (Paula Malcomson), could have enriched the storytelling.
While "Death by Lightning" may not be the most electrifying political drama, it brings to light the story of a forgotten figure whose potential could have altered the course of American history. By centering on Garfield, Makowsky and director Matt Ross highlight a leader committed to civil rights and governmental reform. Had Garfield survived, the landscape of America might be unrecognizably different today.
