Michael Douglas to Attend the 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival

This year, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) is set to dazzle attendees with the presence of Hollywood legend Michael Douglas. Renowned for attracting major stars over the years, this festival will host Douglas in the charming Czech spa town, where he will present a newly restored version of the iconic film "One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest." Directed by the celebrated Miloš Forman, the film features a stellar performance by Jack Nicholson and has become a timeless classic.

As part of KVIFF’s "Out of the Past" section, this special screening commemorates the film’s 50th anniversary—a milestone celebrated by its sweeping success at the Oscars and numerous international accolades. The festival has highlighted that Douglas, who served as one of the film’s producers and won an Academy Award for Best Picture, will personally introduce the restored version during a grand gala event. He will be joined by fellow producer Paul Zaentz, the nephew of the late Saul Zaentz, who co-produced the film, along with family members of Miloš Forman.

This screening not only honors the legacy of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest" but also celebrates the historical connection between Karlovy Vary and the film’s creatives. Forman, a devoted supporter of the festival, along with Douglas, Zaentz, and actor Danny DeVito—who also starred in the film—are all esteemed recipients of the festival’s prestigious Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema.

The film made Oscar history by being only the second film to clinch all five major Academy Award categories: Best Picture (awarded to Douglas and Zaentz), Best Director (Forman), Best Actor (Jack Nicholson), Best Actress (Louise Fletcher), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Lawrence Hauben and Bo Goldman).

Reflecting on this momentous occasion, KVIFF executive director Kryštof Mucha expressed excitement about Douglas’s return, noting that his presence, along with Paul Zaentz and the Forman family, will create an unforgettable experience in the festival’s rich history. Douglas last graced Karlovy Vary in 1998, when he and Saul Zaentz were honored with the Crystal Globe, making this year’s event even more special.

Join us at the 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for this extraordinary celebration of cinema, creativity, and the enduring legacy of one of film history’s greatest stories!
