As the government shutdown enters its third week, Mark Teixeira, a former MLB star and current congressional candidate, is directing criticism at Democrats in Washington. Teixeira, who is running for Texas’ 21st Congressional District, believes that the "chaos on the left" has created a troubling situation during this shutdown.
The ex-Texas Ranger, Atlanta Brave, and New York Yankee expressed his concerns about the Democrats failing to fulfill their responsibilities. “Elections have consequences,” Teixeira remarked in a recent interview with Will Cain. He emphasized that losing political parties must accept that they won’t always get their way in legislative matters, including budget decisions.
Teixeira asserted, “The Democrats are saying, ‘No, we don’t accept that.’ They’re opting for a government shutdown, making American workers and military personnel suffer because they aren’t getting their demands met.”
Recent polling by Reuters/Ipsos revealed that a significant number of voters—67%—attribute blame for the shutdown to Republicans, while 63% also hold Democrats and even former President Donald Trump accountable. However, Teixeira expressed skepticism about polls, citing a phenomenon he referred to as "Trump derangement syndrome" among those who unfairly criticize conservatives.
He emphasized, “As long as there are Democrats who label everything Republicans do as bad—no matter how reasonable it may be—we have a problem. This situation is reasonable. If you want to negotiate, let’s do that, but don’t hold the government hostage to get your way.”
Teixeira acknowledged the challenges of passing legislation without large majorities and the importance of bipartisanship. Still, he firmly stated, “We’re not going to negotiate with a party that threatens a government shutdown if they don’t get their way. That’s unfair to the American people and to Republicans trying to reach a compromise.”
In a recent post on X, Teixeira expressed his concerns further, claiming, “Democrats are destroying our country, and President Trump needs reinforcements who will fight to take our country back.”
