Mark Hamill Reflects on Carrie Fisher’s Reminder About His "Star Wars" Legacy
In a recent interview on NPR’s "Fresh Air," Mark Hamill shared a heartfelt memory of his late co-star, Carrie Fisher, who once reminded him of the importance of embracing his iconic role as Luke Skywalker in the beloved "Star Wars" franchise. Hamill recounted how Fisher encouraged him to celebrate his roots after he downplayed his connection to the legendary space saga in a Broadway playbill.
During the interview, Hamill revealed, “Carrie came to see a Broadway show of mine, and in my bio, I listed all my theater credits, concluding with, ‘He’s also known for a series of popular space movies.’ She pointed out, ‘What’s the deal? How come you don’t mention “Star Wars”?’ I explained that I wanted to highlight my extensive theater experience. But she quickly said, ‘Hey, get over yourself. You’re Luke Skywalker. I’m Princess Leia. Embrace it.’”
This moment resonated with Hamill, who realized the significance of his role in the franchise. “It made me think about what unique space I occupy in the industry,” he said, acknowledging Fisher’s perspective.
Together with Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Hamill and Fisher formed the iconic trio of the original "Star Wars" trilogy, which has since evolved into one of the most cherished and successful film franchises in cinematic history. Although Hamill cherishes his time in that galaxy far, far away, he recently expressed that he has no plans to reprise his role as Luke Skywalker.
“I’m incredibly grateful to George Lucas for allowing me to be part of that journey,” Hamill reflected. “Back in those early days, George referred to ‘Star Wars’ as ‘the most expensive low-budget movie ever made.’ We never anticipated it would become such a lasting franchise and a vital part of pop culture. I feel my time in that role is complete, and I believe it’s essential for the franchise to focus on the future and explore new characters.”
