Milan Malpensa Airport Partially Evacuated After Fire Incident
A chaotic scene unfolded at Milan’s Malpensa Airport, one of Italy’s busiest travel hubs, as a man set fire to a check-in area, prompting a partial evacuation. Video footage shared on social media captures the intensity of the situation inside Terminal 1, where flames erupted from a check-in desk, causing panic among passengers. The assailant also vandalized digital screens before being apprehended by authorities.
The Lombardy Airports Association confirmed that a man has been arrested and the situation is now under control. However, travelers should be aware that there may be delays and cancellations affecting departures, particularly during this peak travel season favored by British tourists. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, according to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.
The incident occurred around 11:00 AM local time (09:00 GMT) when emergency services were alerted to reports of an "agitated man" in the terminal. Eyewitness videos show large flames rising from the check-in area while startled passengers react in alarm. The footage also captures the moment the man began smashing overhead digital screens with a blunt object before being subdued by several bystanders.
Images from the airport depict long lines of passengers waiting outside the terminal as smoke billows from within. Travelers are advised to check their flight status and stay updated on the situation as authorities work to ensure safety and restore normal operations.
