Bayern Munich Signs Luis Díaz from Liverpool for £65.5 Million: A Milestone Transfer
Bayern Munich has officially secured the signing of Colombian winger Luis Díaz from Liverpool in a remarkable deal valued at £65.5 million. This transfer marks the third-highest expenditure in the club’s history, following the acquisitions of Harry Kane and Lucas Hernández. The 28-year-old international has committed to a four-year contract with the Bundesliga champions, which includes an option for an additional season.
Díaz’s transfer also represents a significant financial move for Liverpool, as it becomes their third-largest sale ever, surpassed only by the transfers of Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suárez to Barcelona. The Colombian had made his desire to leave the Premier League champions clear, having previously sought an exit during the last summer transfer window.
In an emotional farewell posted on Instagram, Díaz expressed his gratitude for his three and a half years at Anfield. "These years will always be cherished. I arrived with dreams, and I leave proud of our achievements together," he stated. He also took a moment to thank the club’s supporters, teammates, and coaching staff, describing Liverpool as "a special team" that will always hold a place in his heart.
The winger’s farewell took a poignant turn as he paid tribute to his former teammate Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a road accident earlier this month. "It would have been the perfect goodbye if we hadn’t lost one of our own in such a tragic way," Díaz reflected, adding, "I will never forget him. We will always remember him."
Liverpool stands to make a £26 million profit from this transaction, having originally signed Díaz from Porto for £45 million in January 2022. While Porto had negotiated potential performance-related bonuses worth £15 million, only £4 million of these were activated during his tenure at Anfield. Importantly, Porto held no sell-on rights, allowing Liverpool to retain the full proceeds from this sale.
This transfer contributes to a remarkable £190 million generated through player sales since Richard Hughes took over as sporting director in June 2024. This influx of funds comes despite Liverpool’s significant investment of nearly £300 million during the current transfer window, which includes high-profile signings like Luis Díaz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Hugo Ekitike.
Looking ahead, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak has emerged as Liverpool’s top target following Díaz’s departure. However, acquiring the Swedish striker would require breaking the British transfer record, an endeavor that the Premier League champions realize would necessitate substantial financial resources.
Isak reportedly has a preference for a move to Anfield, but negotiations with Newcastle will be essential before any transfer can materialize. Liverpool’s financial flexibility may further improve, as players like Darwin Núñez, Harvey Elliott, Tyler Morton, and Ben Doak could also be on the move before the transfer window closes.
With the recent sales bolstering their financial position, Liverpool now has the resources to make a significant bid if the right opportunity arises.
