Discover the Magic of Lucca Comics & Games: A Celebration of Identity and Community
Film director Manlio Castagna first visited the enchanting city of Lucca in 2018, and what he initially perceived as a vibrant carnival filled with colorful costumes soon revealed itself to be much more. "When I entered this incredible walled city, I felt it was a place where people could embrace their identities," Castagna shares with Variety. "Lucca Comics & Games is a space where individuals can truly be themselves, donning masks that reveal their authentic selves."
Castagna’s latest documentary, “I Love Lucca Comics & Games,” serves as a heartfelt tribute to Europe’s largest comic convention. For five exhilarating days, the medieval town in Tuscany transforms into a haven for cosplay enthusiasts, featuring book signings, artist showcases, screenings, exhibitions, and concerts that attract over 300,000 visitors to its picturesque streets and piazzas.
Through the lens of the Mandala metaphor, Castagna intricately weaves together the stories of the festival’s organizers, artists, writers, game designers, filmmakers, and passionate fans. "This film is about communities," he emphasizes. "It illustrates how gratitude acts as a glue, connecting everyday people to the artists and the broader community."
The documentary captures heartwarming moments of fans meeting their beloved creators. While many of these comic book and gaming stars may not be household names outside of their fandom, the film beautifully showcases the deep appreciation fans have for them. By tapping into compelling stories from social media, Castagna utilized two camera units throughout the festival, working closely with the event to gain access to VIP guests like bestselling authors R. L. Stine and Licia Troisi, rapper Frankie Hi-NRG MC, and renowned comic artists Pera Toons, Sio, Yoshitaka Amano, and Roberto Recchio.
Despite facing challenges like rain on the first day of filming, the sun eventually shone through, illuminating the festival’s vibrant atmosphere. One particularly touching storyline featured a father and son bonding over their shared love for geek culture. Castagna, who has spent 25 years engaging with young people as the former vice director of the Giffoni Film Festival for kids, has witnessed firsthand how perceptions of this culture have evolved.
"When I first started exploring comics and role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons, they were considered niche interests," he recalls. "Back then, kids who read manga often faced bullying. Now, it’s completely different; every child in the classroom knows about manga, anime, and D&D. Lucca Comics & Games serves as a window into this cultural transformation, while also acting as a catalyst for change."
Many individuals featured in Castagna’s documentary have experienced life-changing moments at Lucca. From finding life partners to embracing their true selves, attendees discover friendships and a sense of belonging. "The title that came to mind while filming was ‘The Happiness Effect,’ because Lucca truly has this magical impact on people," Castagna notes. "Attendees wait in lines for hours, yet they remain joyful. Despite the large crowds, I’ve never witnessed fighting or conflict here—it’s a remarkable example of what society can be."
Reflecting on the Mandala metaphor, Castagna explains, “Lucca Comics & Games thrives on the collective contributions of thousands: organizers, exhibitors, artists, and fans. It’s a communal ritual that mirrors the careful crafting of the festival itself. However, like the Mandala, the event is destined to dissolve. Once it’s over, the squares return to emptiness, the streets regain their rhythm, and all that remains are cherished memories and the excitement for the next edition.”
Mark your calendars! Lucca Comics & Games will take place from October 29 to November 2, and I Wonder Pictures will release “I Love Lucca Comics & Games” in Italy on November 10. Don’t miss this extraordinary celebration of creativity, community, and the joy of being oneself!
