Who Should LSU Consider for Its Next Head Coach? Joel Klatt Weighs In on Brian Kelly’s Departure

In the wake of LSU’s recent decision to part ways with head football coach Brian Kelly, sports analyst Joel Klatt has shared his thoughts on who the university should target as Kelly’s successor. Following the Tigers’ disappointing 49-25 defeat to Texas A&M, athletic director Scott Woodward announced Kelly’s exit just a day later. Kelly, who left Notre Dame after the 2021 season, spent less than four seasons in Baton Rouge, failing to meet the high expectations set for the program.

LSU’s Coaching Search: What’s Next?

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry recently stated that Woodward would no longer oversee the search for the next head football coach. This comes as LSU grapples with the financial implications of Kelly’s $54 million buyout, a figure that has faced criticism from Landry. "We are not going down a failed path," he emphasized during a press conference. Landry pointed out the hefty buyout associated with former Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher, which Woodward negotiated. There are discussions about utilizing private donors to help cover some of Kelly’s buyout costs, which could be reduced if Kelly secures another coaching position.

The Future of LSU Football

Scott Woodward has been LSU’s athletic director since 2019 and previously oversaw a $17 million buyout for former coach Ed Orgeron in 2021. Governor Landry made it clear that Woodward will not be involved in choosing the next coach, stating, "I’ll let [President] Donald Trump select him before I let him do it." Instead, Landry indicated that a committee from the Board of Supervisors—appointed by the governor—would take charge of the search for the new head coach.

Landry also stressed the importance of properly compensating the next coach while advocating for performance-based metrics in the contract. "I’m tired of rewarding failure in this country," he remarked, emphasizing his focus on the financial responsibilities to taxpayers related to firing a coach with a problematic contract.

Looking Ahead

Despite efforts to boost funding for transfer portal players, Kelly’s tenure did not yield the anticipated results, particularly in terms of competing for national championships. As LSU enters a bye week, the search for a new head coach intensifies, with fans and analysts alike eager to see who will take the helm of the football program next.
