In response to the backlash, Homeland Security issued a statement clarifying the situation: "Senator Padilla chose to engage in disrespectful political theater by interrupting a live press conference without identifying himself or displaying his Senate security pin while advancing toward Secretary Noem. He was repeatedly instructed to back away but did not comply with officers’ commands."
