LeBron James Faces Lawsuit Over Hennessy Ad: What You Need to Know
LeBron James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, is in the spotlight once again, this time because of a new advertisement for Hennessy that has sparked a lawsuit. The basketball superstar recently teased a big announcement, leading many fans to speculate that he might be announcing his retirement at the end of the season. However, the big reveal was actually the launch of his signature Hennessy bottle.
In the wake of the teaser video, a fan named Andrew Garcia purchased two tickets for the highly anticipated Los Angeles Lakers vs. Cleveland Cavaliers game—where James began his career in 2003—for around $432 each through Ticketmaster, as reported by TMZ Sports. Garcia claims he would not have bought the tickets had he known James wasn’t planning to retire, stating he feels misled regarding the announcement.
Garcia’s lawsuit alleges "fraud, deception, misrepresentation, and any and all basis of legal recovery," highlighting the emotional investment fans make when purchasing tickets based on a player’s potential retirement announcement. Following the teaser, StubHub noted a significant spike in ticket prices, with the average rising from $250 to $500 and sales increasing twentyfold in just one hour.
In the teaser released on Monday, James referred to the announcement as "the decision of all decisions," stirring excitement and speculation as he prepares for his record-breaking 23rd NBA season. While James remains tight-lipped about his retirement plans, he expressed enthusiasm about continuing to play the game he loves. "I’m excited about the opportunity to be able to play the game that I love for another season," he shared on September 29. "However the journey lays out this year, I’m super invested, because I don’t know when the end is. I know it’s a lot sooner than later."
Despite being 40 years old, James shows no signs of slowing down. Last season, he averaged an impressive 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game. He also recorded 10 triple-doubles, his highest since the 2019-20 season when he secured his fourth NBA championship. After celebrating his 40th birthday on December 30, he went on to average 25.1 points per game—the highest for any player aged 40 or older.
In a historic moment, James became the first player in NBA history to compete in the league alongside his son, Bronny James, who was drafted by the Lakers last summer. The father-son duo played a total of 21 games together.
