New NBA League in Europe: Exciting Developments Ahead
The NBA is making significant strides towards establishing a new league in Europe, with ongoing discussions with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and other key stakeholders. According to Silver, while the vision for a new European league is progressing, it may take a few more years to fully realize. He highlighted the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as a potential launchpad for this new competition. "It’s a process that will take years, not months," Silver stated, emphasizing the importance of careful planning and collaboration with existing leagues, teams, European players, media partners, and marketing firms.
The idea of an NBA-style league in Europe has been in discussion for years, and recent talks have become more productive. In March, Silver and FIBA Secretary-General Andreas Zagklis announced their commitment to moving forward with the concept, aiming to start with an initial roster of 16 teams. “There is a vast community of basketball fans in Europe that remains underserved,” Silver noted. “We see a tremendous opportunity to introduce a new league tailored after the NBA.” Currently, nearly one-sixth of NBA players originate from Europe, including superstars like Nikola Jokic from Serbia and Giannis Antetokounmpo from Greece, both of whom have won multiple MVP awards.
The NBA’s board of governors is set to discuss further steps regarding the European league in July during their meeting in Las Vegas. Silver hinted that the league could potentially announce or even kick off the new venture around the 2028 Olympics, which will attract significant attention to international basketball.
Cities such as London, Manchester, Rome, and Munich have already expressed interest in being part of this exciting new venture, with potential team owners stepping forward to join the initiative. Silver remarked, "While we haven’t had direct conversations yet, there’s been considerable interest from various organizations in major European markets."
