Breaking News: Kevin Durant Traded to Houston Rockets in Major NBA Offseason Move
In a significant shake-up for the NBA, the Phoenix Suns have reportedly agreed to trade superstar Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets. This trade marks one of the first major transactions of the offseason, as reported by ESPN on Sunday.
Durant, who joined the Suns from the Brooklyn Nets during the 2022-23 season, will make his way to Houston in exchange for promising young talent Jalen Green, veteran Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, and five second-round picks.
Suns’ Struggles Lead to Major Changes
The Suns’ decision to trade Durant comes after a disappointing season where they finished with a 36-46 record and missed the playoffs under head coach Mike Budenholzer. Despite the team’s initial hopes that adding Durant to a roster featuring Devin Booker and later Bradley Beal would propel them back to the NBA Finals, Phoenix struggled to find success. The Suns were eliminated in the Western Conference semifinals in the 2022-23 season and suffered a first-round exit in the 2023-24 season, ultimately failing to qualify for the postseason this year.
Durant’s Stellar Performance Continues
At 36 years old, Durant remains one of the most prolific scorers in the league when healthy. Last season, he averaged an impressive 26.6 points per game while shooting 52.7% from the field. Since the 2009-10 season, he has been selected as an All-Star in every year he was available, with the exception of the 2019-20 season, which he missed due to injury.
What the Suns Gain: Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks
In this trade, the Suns receive two pivotal players. Jalen Green, just 23 years old, played all 82 games for the second consecutive year in the 2024-25 season, averaging 21 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game. Dillon Brooks, 29, will be relocating for the second time in his career after moving from the Memphis Grizzlies to the Rockets in 2023. During his two seasons in Houston, Brooks averaged 13.4 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.
Rockets on the Rise
The Houston Rockets had an impressive 2024-25 season, finishing with a 52-30 record and securing the second spot in the Western Conference standings.
