Katie Porter: Acknowledging Mistakes Amid Viral Video Controversy
California gubernatorial candidate and former Democratic lawmaker Katie Porter recently addressed her controversial on-camera moments that went viral, admitting she "could have handled things better." In a clip shared widely, Porter displayed frustration during an interview with a reporter, almost cutting the conversation short. Another video from 2021, reported by Politico, showed her snapping at a staff member to "Get out of my f—ing shot!" when they accidentally entered the video frame behind her.
Reflecting on these incidents during her appearance on the Inside California Politics show, Porter expressed her desire for the public to understand her commitment to improvement. "When I look at those videos, I want people to know that I understand that I could have handled things better," she stated. Porter emphasized her reputation for addressing tough questions and expressed her appreciation for her team’s hard work. "I think people who know me know I can be tough, but I need to do a better job expressing appreciation for the amazing work that my team does," she added.
The footage of Porter’s heated exchange with CBS California’s Julie Watts gained traction last week, highlighting her impatience with the reporter’s probing questions. At one point, she expressed frustration and labeled the interviewer as "argumentative," indicating her desire to avoid an "unhappy experience" on camera. "I want to make sure that people understand why I am in this race and what I am fighting for," Porter explained, noting the unique challenges faced by Californians today. She pointed to the impact of Donald Trump’s actions on the economy and society, underlining the need for strong leadership during these turbulent times.
Porter clarified her approach to governance, stating, "If people are looking for someone who is going to sit in Sacramento quietly and rubber-stamp things, that’s not me. But I absolutely could have handled things better."
In the earlier video, during a remote discussion with Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm on energy and climate issues, Porter’s frustration escalated when a staffer inadvertently appeared on screen. After snapping at the staff member, she later expressed regret for her outburst. "I apologized, expressing that I had lost my temper and was frustrated in the moment," she shared. "We were able to redo the shot, and I got the facts right."
As Katie Porter moves forward in her campaign, her reflections on these moments highlight her commitment to growth and her dedication to representing the people of California effectively.
