Kamala Harris Discusses Leadership in the Democratic Party on "The Late Show"

In a recent appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," former Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the current leadership landscape of the Democratic Party. While promoting her upcoming book, "107 Days," which explores her experiences during the 2024 presidential campaign, Harris engaged in a thoughtful discussion about the party’s direction.

During the interview, Colbert pressed Harris for specifics, asking, "Who’s leading the Democratic Party?" Harris responded cautiously, acknowledging the presence of many leaders within the party but refraining from naming any individuals. "There are lots of leaders," she stated. When Colbert insisted on identifying a singular leader, Harris explained, "I think it is a mistake for us who want to figure out how to navigate this situation to put it on the shoulders of any one person. It’s really on all of our shoulders."

Harris’s upcoming book, set for release in September, promises a behind-the-scenes look at her presidential campaign, which ultimately did not succeed. Recently, she also announced that she will not run for governor of California in 2026, which has led to speculation about her potential candidacy for the presidency in 2028. The race could be competitive, with notable figures like California Governor Gavin Newsom and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg potentially entering the fray.

In the interview, Harris addressed the challenges of distinguishing herself from President Joe Biden during the 2024 campaign. She expressed her reluctance to criticize him, especially after he withdrew from the race. "I didn’t want to participate in the piling on of my boss," she said.

Additionally, Harris conveyed her astonishment at the level of capitulation she has observed since Donald Trump’s presidency began. "Perhaps it’s naive of me, but I believed there were many who should be guardians of our democracy and our system, and I didn’t see the capitulation coming," she remarked.

This conversation touched on various significant topics, including the recent multi-million-dollar settlement involving Paramount related to Trump’s lawsuit over the editing of Harris’s "60 Minutes" interview. Harris’s insights reflect her ongoing commitment to the Democratic Party and the complexities of its leadership dynamics.
