On Wednesday, President Donald Trump welcomed the renowned Italian soccer team, Juventus FC, to the White House as they visited the U.S. for the Club World Cup. During this event, while the players stood behind Trump’s desk in the Oval Office, he launched into a discussion about transgender athletes in women’s sports, tying it into a broader critique of former President Joe Biden.
As the conversation unfolded, Trump questioned the Juventus players, asking, "Could a woman make your team, fellas?" The players exchanged uncertain glances but refrained from answering. Trump then directed the same question to the team’s general manager, Damien Comolli. Comolli mentioned, “We have a very good women’s team,” but Trump pressed further, asking, “But they should be playing with women?” Comolli chose not to respond, prompting Trump to quip, “See, they’re very diplomatic.”
Transgender Issues in Sports and Trump’s Agenda
Transgender participation in women’s sports has emerged as a significant focus for Trump’s second administration. On February 5, he signed the "Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports" executive order, a move that followed a strong campaign on this topic in 2024. This order has led the NCAA to revise its gender eligibility policy, now restricting competition in the women’s category to biological females.
However, Trump’s initiatives have faced considerable pushback from Democratic leaders across the nation. His administration is currently involved in legal battles, including a lawsuit against Maine and a case initiated by Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. Additionally, federal Title IX investigations are underway concerning high school sports leagues in California and Massachusetts.
