John Cusack’s Controversial Bluesky Post Sparks Backlash for Alleged Antisemitism
Actor John Cusack, known for his role in "High Fidelity," recently faced significant criticism after sharing a meme on the social media platform Bluesky that some have labeled as “antisemitic” and reminiscent of Nazi propaganda. The graphic, which linked former U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken—who is Jewish—to notorious figures Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, included images adorned with the Star of David. Critics argue that this imagery evokes harmful, centuries-old antisemitic stereotypes about Jewish conspiracies wielding power and influence.
In the meme, Epstein and Maxwell are falsely portrayed as agents of Mossad, a claim that has gained traction among far-right groups but lacks credible evidence. This conspiracy theory has been promoted by outlets such as TruNews, a Christian media organization, and individuals like Mark Collett, who has been associated with extremist ideologies in the UK.
Shortly after posting the controversial graphic, which is shown in the screenshot below, Cusack deleted it within two hours. It remains unclear whether he removed it voluntarily or if Bluesky’s moderation team intervened. Deadline has reached out to Cusack’s representatives at Independent Artist Group for further clarification.
The post quickly drew widespread condemnation on Bluesky and other platforms. Mike Masnick, a board member of Bluesky and founder of the Techdirt blog, referred to it as “antisemitic Nazi s**t.” Angus Johnston, a history professor at The City University of New York, described the content as “straight-up antisemitism.”
This isn’t the first time Cusack has faced backlash for sharing antisemitic content. In 2019, he tweeted an image that depicted a hand stamped with the Star of David suppressing a group of people, captioned: “To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.” Following that incident, Cusack issued an apology, stating, “I would like to express my sincere apologies for the insensitive and offensive graphic that I regrettably retweeted.” He emphasized that the material he shared does not reflect his views and reiterated his belief in equality, freedom, and peace for all people.
As discussions around the implications of social media content continue, Cusack’s latest post serves as a reminder of the responsibility that public figures have in their online interactions and the potential consequences of their words.
